doctor clown
Doctor Clown is the project of Chad Hopper and Amanda Jones, who are perhaps better known for their roles in Austin’s rowdy toy band Night Viking. In contrast to N.V.’s rip-roaring chaotic clatter, which coalesces in miraculous moments tasting of polygonal sandwiches (absurd but tasty), D.C. is gender-balanced and spacious. Their self-titled debut CD-R is a 4-track exercise in simplicity/imperfection, covering the same range of emotions that one might feel during a battle with cancer or a trip to the circus.
the evens
The Evens are a Washington, D.C. punk duo, formed in the fall of 2001, comprising partners Ian MacKaye (of Fugazi, formerly of Minor Threat) and Amy Farina (formerly of The Warmers). After Ian MacKaye’s band Fugazi entered a hiatus, the Evens began practicing extensively, and eventually played a few shows and recorded a self-titled album, released in March 2005 on MacKaye’s label, Dischord Records. The Evens are known for their unusual choices in venues for performances and the stylistic change from what many have dubbed the “D.C.” or “Dischord” sound. The Washington Post has described the sound as “what happens when post-hardcore becomes post-post-hardcore.
Business Men
We are the Business Men (Pat, Smokey, and Preston). Our music is psychedelic and expensive. We use Type II tape. This recording was made last summer in the livingroom at Bundyhill.
da ooze
Da Ooze was a side project in the early 00′s. Songwriting of this caliber speaks for itself.
reba
Song from Dirk and Smokey about Reba. Reba Nell McEntire (born March 28, 1955) is a Grammy award-winning American country music artist. She began her career in the music industry singing with her siblings on local radio shows and rodeos. As a solo act, she was invited to perform at a rodeo in Oklahoma City, which caught the attention of country artist Red Steagall. He brought her to Nashville, Tennessee, where she eventually signed a contract with Mercury Records in 1975. She released her first solo album in 1977 and released five additional studio albums under the label until 1983.
windmill band
Unreleased song by the Windmill Band. This version was recorded in Washington State @ The Temple, but didn’t make the final record. The song is titled Dream Warrior for all of you who dream so aggressively.
Cave, Dizzy and Fishboy
Once upon a time, a long time ago, Cavedweller and Dizzy Spells Martian recorded this song. Here is that song.
Eric Sterling
Mike and Smokey
From Chef of The Atlantic Sand Band:
“This song was recorded in close proximity, like a week before or after I think, to the song Rowdy Wolfpack. Recorded in my room on a shitty computer with protools. Same people pretty much as Atlantic Sand Band(Walt, Smokey, Gene, and probably Tim and Preston). Not sure who is playing guitar, either Preston or maybe even Dirk? I think Walt or Gene played keyboard.”
Eddie Mexico
Eddie Mexico is from Beaumont, Texas and works at Luby’s. In his spare time he records rhymes, raps and poems into any free standing microphone in the Bay area. It took him quite awhile to get this one down on paper and computer, but it finally came around. He doesn’t have a myspace profile or a facebook or a website or an email address. He only has a job selling drugs and doing whatever else. Here’s his first recorded song called, “Robot Mountain”. Most of his other songs are about peel out contests and tubing on the river.
Knock Me Down
Years ago, Smokey Farris, Gene Defcon and Travis Catsull got together to record a number of songs in an apartment in Austin, Texas. All the material was quiet, lo-fi songs sang in a freestyle mood. Here is one of those songs.
Hard Rock Zombie
Hard Rock Zombie: from the bottom of my magic pump.. a coal lump.. to bury her favorite hole.. one thousand years later.. all we know is diamonds.. and shoveling trumps for mimes.. hanging out where the one world ends, turns out puna was the fuckin’ horizon…
Here’s a new song called, “Sold Them Bums”
Mexican Hayride
Not to be confused with Mexican Hayride, the 1948 film starring the comedy team of Abbott and Costello where two con men selling phony stock flee to Mexico ahead of the law, where they run into a woman friend from their earlier days, who is now a bullfighter. No, this was just a song Preston Dukes and Travis Catsull recorded one day.
Jennifer Moore of Yellow Fever
Taken from the Austin Chronicle”
“Local trio YellowFever knows how to scare up a perfect pop song. Guitarist/vocalist Jennifer Moore, and drummer Adam Jones all spent time in the much-missed early-Aughties group Teenage Dog, and YellowFever, which debuted in 2006, is an extension of that off-kilter sound. The local trio also has branches in bands like the Carrots and Voxtrot (Moore), Basic (Jones), and local label Business Deal Records, which has released innumerable projects involving the two. Hugpatch Records released an EP, Cats and Rats, in 2007.”
Here’s a song from that EP.
Cityhall Gambler
Cityhall Gambler (aka Eric Sterling) was born in Houston, Texas and writes country songs. His influences include Don Williams, Silver Jews, Jack Johnson, Johnny (Paycheck and Cash), Waylon Jennings and Texas country music in general. He recently returned to Austin, Texas after living in Louisville, Kentucky. Cityhall Gambler will begin recording his first album this Fall.
Spud Webb vs. Jordan
La Junta High School is free style rap group formed in 2003 that mostly sang about former and current basketball players. They released a few songs here and there, but have since drifted off into other bands. Here is a rare La Junta High School track featuring guest rapper Afrikadabra (aka Switchblade) from the Hayden Elders. In this song he calls out Spud Webb for being ugly. Spud Webb was born into poverty. He was raised in a small three-bedroom home and used basketball as an inspiration. Webb was never tall, but he used his quickness and jumping ability to outplay the other kids. At Wilmer-Hutchins High School, he played on the junior varsity team where he made a large impact.
