Stanton Meadowdale
Stanton Meadowdale’s Bio:
“Love. Comradeship. Up all night together on coke and making songs because we are alone otherwise. A beach house in the Hamptons. That Winter month together. It’s like Rome is Roma and Roma spelled backwards is Amor, which is Love. And Amor is A Mor, as in the absence of death. So, Love is the victor over death.”
Dutch Chester
Bio:
“Dutch Chester is from Amarillo, Texas. Seasoned in the music and club scene for many years, Dutch Chester writes and records original music. Currently Dutch Chester has 5 songs being played on several different internet radio stations across the country and Canada. Dutch Chester has a 6 song E.P. titled ‘The Mirror Never Lies’ that is currently being promoted. Dutch Chester is also seeking a label and representation.”
Shit yes. Whitesnake.
Dizzy Spells Martian
“Heartfelt, honest, stripped back, real, quirky…call it what you want, Anti-folk captures something that a lot of more ‘mainstream’ music has lost. And Dizzy Spells Martian is a wonderful example of this. Like fellow Anti-folkster, Kimya Dawson, her performance is gentle, personal and deeply touching. It’s almost like we’re seeing inside her head. Like me it seems that Dizzy would rather like to live in another world. A much nicer world. And she brings to life one that I’d be quite happy to live in forever and ever and ever.”
office
Influenced by Norweigan Death Metal and most stoner metal, the short lived Northwestern band, Office, only recorded one night. This song was about the 3rd coming of Jesus and is of poor recording quality. Office was comprised of Rick Masher and Bobby Ratzinger, but is no longer together.
David Israel
Austin Sound has this to say about David Israel:
There is a fair amount of self-deprecation and oblique life-into-art (Conor Oberst, Vic Chestnutt), clever and poetic lyrics (Dave Berman, John Darnielle), a playfulness that takes itself quite seriously (Will Oldham, Chan Marshall), and an emotional depth that is readily accessible but entirely unique and individual. But in looking over this list (and hopefully forgiving its limited, patriarchal bent), the artists mentioned all set themselves apart with a unique voice that combines all of these elements and mold them in memorable, sometimes unforgettable, songs. Whatever it may be that makes these artists stand out as songwriters and performers, David Israel seems to have it in droves.
Scene from the movie
Danger Weekend was created for the movie THE SILVER VEIN. The movie stars Preston Dukes, Walt Satan and a bunch of dogs. Miles plays the voice of Denny’s dog. What happens when a big city prospector comes to steal the silver of a poor farmer living happily near the river? You’ll have to watch and find out. Danger Weekend was composed by T.W. Bond and Gene Defcon @ Bundyhill Studios. You can hear the entire song here as its used in the movie only slightly.
The Bear Coat
Brooklyn based duo, The Bear Coat, was spawned from the belly of a Buck Hunter machine and a bottle of cheap mezcal. Borrowing from the ubiquitous influence of The Beatles and The Beach Boys, The Bear Coat break away from obvious pop conventions by channeling the vocal absurdity of Frank Zappa, the uneasy sexuality of Tim Curry solo records, and the always appreciated late-era Elvis aspects. Delivered using the DIY sonic stylings of The Frogs and Elliot Smith, The Bear Coat feature complex vocal arrangements and avant textures that augment simple little pop songs that are so catchy you will eventually grow to resent the attachment.
Kurt Rambis
La Junta High School is free style rap group formed in 2003 that mostly sang about former and current basketball players. They released a few songs here and there, but have since drifted off into other bands. Enjoy this freestyle rap about former NBA player Kurt Rambis. Rambis was drafted by the New York Knicks as 58th pick in the 1980 NBA Draft, but was subsequently waived by the Knicks before playing in Greece. There he joined the Greek League with AEK Athens BC, using the name Kyriakos Rambidis, won the Greek Cup in 1981 and was named MVP of the final.
You and Me
You and Me, the band that recently relocated from Portland, Oregon, is now a Texas band. Little is known about them other than what they have written on their myspace: WE CAME OUT OF AN EGG SHELL TAPE DECK HAND HELD MICRO WAVE WARPED FILM ABOUT TEENAGERS MAKING POOR DECISIONS AND THEN WE PUT SPRAY PAINT UP OUR NOSES. They are nice people who record with a four-track and sing fun songs. They are playing at Emo’s in Austin, Texas on October 24th, 2009 with Yellow Fever. Check ‘em out.
The Scrams
The Scrams are Joe Cardillo, Dan Eiland, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, and Matt Vanek from Albuquerque, New Mexico. They recently released a 7 inch record and sent us an eVersion of the album and we’re really digging it. You can buy their 7 inch here. Our favorite was the 60′s inspired song, The Molasses. The Molasses is a brand new dance that’s sweeping the nation, or at least New Mexico, or at least Albuquerque. Listen here and do the molasses.
Asphalt the Recorder - 7 inch cover
One of the more interesting bands to play in the Denton, Texas area in the late 90′s was Asphalt the Recorder. Clever lyrics and harmonies created a healthy North Texas following for creative duo. Often found dressed up like Jesus and his step-son, Jesus, Asphalt the Recorder focused on such topics as Robert Z’Dar, sexual encounters and a slew of obscure references. This song is from the only release (other than a tape or two) by Hot Link Records in 1998. Asphalt was also part of a compilation released by Kitten Pants that you can buy here. Listen to Willem and Mary:
Gene Defcon
Coming to you, and you alone, is an UNRELEASED Gene Defcon song. Never heard before by the ears of man, woman, elf or animal but easily available to those who visit us @ Blackbird Songs. Gene Defcon is your typical, everyday, average mega-genius. In the mornings he wakes to a pre-recorded loop of math equations set to the soaring sounds of Mozart. Around 11 AM he watches a videocassette of the movie “Baby Geniuses” and chews on dried fruit and exotic nuts. And then he continues the day. Here’s a song you’ve never heard from Gene called Civilized:
Shapes Have Fangs w/ Sky Saxon
The latest song from Shapes Have Fangs from their 7 inch split Cavedweller. Voted best 7 inch by The Austin Chronicle in 2009 and only available through Business Deal Records. Until the surprising death of Sky of Saxon of The Seeds, Shapes Have Fangs performed as Sky’s back up band in venues around Austin, TX. Listen to their latest track, “This Mess I’m In” here.
Leo Bear Creek
Bear Creek (aka Leo Bear Creek) is a folk group out of France and sent in an album quite some time ago called “Twirl It Like A Magic Wand”. Bear Creek can be found in the same groupings of Ben Lupus and Coming Soon! Take a listen to one of their newer songs that made the Juno soundtrack. It’s called Vampire.
Hard Rock Zombie
A new release from Hard Rock Zombie who has released countless folk songs over the last decade. Drifting from Hawaii to the Great Northwest a song will trickle down us to now and again. This song was surprising in that it moved Hard Rock Zombie into a new genre of music. Check it out.
The Carrots
THE CARROTS formed with the intention of offering a fun and hip project, modernizing the legacy of girl groups from the sixties such as THE MARVELETTES, THE COOKIES and THE SUPREMES. The digital component played a major role in the story of the group: Veronica Ortuño placed an ad on myspace where she sought out people to start a group which sounded like THE RONETTES or THE CRYSTALS and this was just the start of the creation of the band in 2005. In 2009 they broke up, but did release these albums.
Charles Bukowski
A never before released recording of a 1974 poetry reading by world famous twentieth century American poet Charles Bukowski (1922-1993) is one you’ll have to stuff in your CD player as soon as you get it. In 1974, the intrepid Bukowski journeyed from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City to give a featured reading at the Underwater Poetry Festival, along with Alta, Ricardo Sanchez, and Andy Clausen. The recording of the reading given in the social work auditorium of the University of Utah. Buy the album here! Listen as he reads a poem called Now She Hates Me:
Business Deal Logo
Recorded @ Bundyhill Studios on Austin’s infamous East Side by a group of friends from Business Deal Records. The story goes that a bunch of members of various groups from Business Deal got together and recorded this song, or was it only two? While it’s a common thing for them to record numerous songs at a time this was inspired by a birthday party they were going attend later in the week. The song was actually a gift for the birthday person. We’re going to share it here as it’s pretty funny and entertaining.
Teenage Dog Flyer
Teenage Dog is interested in animals, visual art stuff, muzaks & noises & sounds. all that stuff & all the other stuff, most of the stuff and things. They sound like sounds like sounds like sounds like sounds like sounds like sounds like sort of rock of the modernish variety. not prehistoric rock but posthistoric rock. several different voices and several different times. group participation. They are in Chicago, New York and some other places.
Hatti Moss
Hatti Moss lives in Washington State and plays regularly in venues there. She states, “Born and raised in Umapine, OR – i was raised on bluegrass, country, and some rock. i learned to play guitar from my father and brother at 14, and have been sticking to the same basic chords i learned back then, ever since. i’d like to think i have an unique sound of my own, however, i’m more of a cover artist, then a songwriter. fortunately, i have plenty of friends who are songwriters… and they help inspire me to keep trying, while supplying me with amazing songs to sing all the while.” Here Hatti covers Bed, originally written by Dirk Michener.
