manikin

The inadequate nature of my knowledge and exposure to punk becomes very apparent every time I spin Manikin’s latest release, Stop the Sirens. When I hear it, my head snaps back and forth and the chaotic pulse of Manikin steers me into what can only be described as a punk coma. I drool, my arms go numb, and then I get up again to flip the record. The allure of Manikin lies somewhere in their panache for necessity. They color completely within the lines of their minimal three-piece outfit. The music only diverges at moments, particularly when the horn sounds dissonant and fluttering in and out of texture. -austin sound

hacienda

There is something to get excited about in south-central Texas. In fact the buzz surrounding San Antonio’s Hacienda may signal a rebirth of young rock n’ roll -with emphasis on the “roll”- to the country’s landscape. Formed by cousins Abraham Villanueva (piano/vocals) and Dante Schwebel (guitar/vocals), together with Abraham’s brothers Jaime (drums/vocals) and Rene Villanueva (bass/vocals), this Mexican-American quartet blends a raw yet sophisticated style of pop music with harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles and Beach Boys.

the evens

The Evens are a Washington, D.C. punk duo, formed in the fall of 2001, comprising partners Ian MacKaye (of Fugazi, formerly of Minor Threat) and Amy Farina (formerly of The Warmers). After Ian MacKaye’s band Fugazi entered a hiatus, the Evens began practicing extensively, and eventually played a few shows and recorded a self-titled album, released in March 2005 on MacKaye’s label, Dischord Records. The Evens are known for their unusual choices in venues for performances and the stylistic change from what many have dubbed the “D.C.” or “Dischord” sound. The Washington Post has described the sound as “what happens when post-hardcore becomes post-post-hardcore.

cavedweller

From the album “The Oldest Arm in 18 Parts”.

1995 was the year Cavedweller, born Dirk Michener, blew out of Denton with his molasses-rich, lo-fi ramblings. Initially an acoustic endeavor, Michener, who also co-founded the now-Austin-based Business Deal Records, surveyed the weird and the bizarre via his guitar, incorporating the best Sixties folk with a love of Sebadoh.

comp album cover

This compilation is a chronicle of the get togethers, group intoxications, and one-time projects that have happened at Bundyhill Recording Studio since it began in 2006. No plans were made for any of these songs and you’ll see the same names come up in many different combinations. For the most part these songs were conceived, written, played and recorded in one session.

Willie Oteri

Guitarist/Composer Willie Oteri is one of those rare people who have, to their credit, not one, but two careers as a musician. One which saw him on stage with names such as Doobie Brothers, Chaka Khan, Bob Seger and Neil Young among others, and a second, after a trip to hell and back (read more at willieoteri.com), that saw the emergence of an innovative bandleader and recording artist with names like Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Markus Reuter and Mike Keneally among others for colleagues and co-musicians. a heady conoction of freely improvised rock music which, like it’s leader’s experiences, can also take one to hell, heaven and back. – T.L. redschox

Like a hot mix tape, Quasitropic Dexadreams encapsulates the nascent buzz of a creative autonomous zone just outside of radar range. All 22 tracks coalesce around variations on retro-electropop or minimalist new wave decadence. The Zom Zoms’ “Race of Zom Zoms” stands out on the basis of unhinged aural hyperactivity, while Associated Microscopes’ sharp-turning, sax-driven instrumentals update the Plugz’s East L.A. sound in a manner begging for a Repo Man remake. – the austin chronicle

Editorial Biography

chants r&b

chants

In the relative isolation of Christchurch, New Zealand, in the mid-1960s, Chants R&B developed a sound heavily indebted to the raunchiest and most R&B-influenced bands of the British Invasion, such as the Rolling Stones, Them, and the Yardbirds. Only two singles were released during the band’s lifetime, and like numerous American garage bands, they weren’t as skilled or original as the British groups that inspired them. However, they were pretty good as such bands went, and certainly among the best acts of this sort in Australasia.

matthew snow

matthew snow

Mathew Snow is from Akron, OH. After roughly a 5 or 6 year period of nothing, he began writing songs again around November 2008. After being invited by fellow Astoria musician and founder of Two Seconds to Midnight, Ziggy Payton, to play a solo show in January 2009 in Astoria, Queens, Josh and Marc offered up their talents in March ’09. Now a 10 song LP entitled Mathew Snow & the Way It Was is currently in the works at Serious Business Studios in SoHo, NYC and is expected to be complete by January 2010 available on vinyl and digital download.

Basic

Basic

“What’s in a name? Well, Basic‘s name is appropriate: Three chords, bass, drums. Still, it’s hard to pin down why the local trio’s music is so infectious. Buddy Holly’s lovesick lyrics and Sebadoh’s heart-dragging jangle are fairly good starts, as singer/guitarist Jason Pearson’s lyrics are forever pining and mending. Composed of Pearson, bassist Nemir Naayem, and drummer Adam Jones (Yellow Fever, Teenage Dog) and assembled in 2005, Basic subbed in Baby Robots drummer Glenn Barovich, and 2007′s Favorite Movie is a good starting point.”

horse + donkey

horse + donkey

When a female horse meets a male donkey, the pitter-patter of little mule hooves often follows. Yet the offspring have an odd number of chromosomes, which nearly always means that they are sterile and can’t reproduce.

But a female mule in Colbran, Colo., has recently become a mother, and her owners are trying to figure out how it happened.

In late April, Laura and Larry Amos discovered that a mule called Kate had a newborn foal. The Amos family runs a wilderness outfitter and owns a large herd of mules.

Laura Amos tells Robert Siegel that she and her husband realized the birth was a rare event and knew that there would be skeptics.
