telephone co

Let’s cut to the chase. The Telephone Company are a couple of weirdos. But weirdos who, somehow — almost unbelievably — manage to create music that kids go crazy over. The Austin-based acoustic rockers call themselves a “hardcore children’s band,” which is more or less accurate. Riding on the same wave of talent-optional energy that makes punk music so kick ass, the duo’s often senseless, musicality chaotic tunes (think Violent Femmes, but with less plot) will either delight or irritate both you and kids, depending on your persuasion.

nate grace

Nate Grace, Jesse Jenkins, and Austin Youngblood phone it in from the Natrix Natrix House in Austin, TX.

Pure ecstasy indeed. The kind of washed out, sun-bleached, reverbed to hell jams labeled ‘hypnagogic pop’ in the last issue of the Wire (we’ll see how long that one sticks) or ‘beach-punk’ elsewhere. Either way or neither way, PE take the same drugs as New Jersey’s Real Estate, creating the blissful soundtrack for an underwater BBQ or your memories of summer. So much mid-range it sounds the same over the phone as it does on record- absolutely fucking perfect, what Transparent Blog nailed as “what it would sound like if the Everley Brothers were the first heartbroken men on the moon.”

evil bebos

The night grew louder as Boston based Irepress took the stage. Sounding like something of a mix between Mastadon and The Appleseed Cast, Irepress served as a sort of gateway between AOE and Evil Bebos. As my eyes grew tired and my ears were being pushed to the limit, noise rockers Evil Bebos went on. I was not sure what to expect after hearing the songs on their Myspace page, but I was pleasantly surprised by the live show they put on. Devin and Chris from AOE pulled double duty as (they are also members of Evil Bebos). Beards and hair flew everywhere as growling vocals rumbled throughout Wall Street. Technical guitar work, swirling synth sounds and bass that could make your heart stop all added up to a pleasant first experience with Evil Bebos. Evil Bebos will be playing The Muse on July 19. -Jason Goucher

giant drag

giant drag is now going it alone which means “no money” which makes it hard to make an album…or eat dinner. if you’d like to donate towards the cause please click the donate button. if you illegally downloaded the first record and feel bad about it now is your chance to repent by donating. if you want to illegally download anything that’s been released thus far and then donate the cost you would have paid i am fine with that too because unless you buy it from me (giant drag ebay store now up, go to giantdrag.com for the link or search “giantdragstore” on ebay members) that money goes to the record label that dropped me and not to me and that sucks. thanks!

grady

Gordie Johnson recently stated in an interview with Guitarist UK, “We’re trying to find the common ground between punk, metal and gospel. I like to think we sound like Motorhead just got the job of backing up John Lee Hooker.”

As reviewed in L.A. magazine Access: “GRADY has enough low end buzz and slide guitar to shake down the walls of the Alamo.”

the bear coat

Brooklyn based duo, The Bear Coat, was spawned from the belly of a Buck Hunter machine and a bottle of cheap mezcal. Borrowing from the ubiquitous influence of The Beatles and The Beach Boys, The Bear Coat break away from obvious pop conventions by channeling the vocal absurdity of Frank Zappa, the uneasy sexuality of Tim Curry solo records, and the always appreciated late-era Elvis aspects. Delivered using the DIY sonic stylings of The Frogs and Elliot Smith, The Bear Coat feature complex vocal arrangements and avant textures that augment simple little pop songs that are so catchy you will eventually grow to resent the attachment.

preston

About this song:

“This is a song I initiated back in the days of that house of James and Grace.  Beachside?  Briarwood?  Forgot the name of the street.  My band has redone this song and has played it live once or twice in the recent past.  Tim and I performed on it and recorded it in that makeshift studio space there. ”

banjo

The beginning of a new style of music that fused more traditional banjo music with stripped down rap beats that was taken to the limits of this one song. This song, recorded many years ago on a cheap microphone in a cheap apartment. This song, that almost made a compilation and should be re-recorded one day.

doctor clown

Doctor Clown is the project of Chad Hopper and Amanda Jones, who are perhaps better known for their roles in Austin’s rowdy toy band Night Viking.  In contrast to N.V.’s rip-roaring chaotic clatter, which coalesces in miraculous moments tasting of polygonal sandwiches (absurd but tasty), D.C. is gender-balanced and spacious.  Their self-titled debut CD-R is a 4-track exercise in simplicity/imperfection, covering the same range of emotions that one might feel during a battle with cancer or a trip to the circus.
